Gift From a Stranger

There were six rose bushes in the garden when we moved into our new rental house in December. This is unusual. Rental gardens are often bare and low maintenance. The roses were pruned back for the winter so I had no idea what to expect. As spring turned into summer they surprised and delighted me time after time! As each rose bush flowered for the first time it was like opening a present – what colour would the blooms be? Someone must have planted and cared for these roses, a previous tenant. I’m so grateful. I wish this stranger knew how much happiness has blossomed from their gift.

“The garden has taught me to live, to appreciate the times when things are fallow and when they’re not.”

Jamaica Kincaid
